GGB’s Principal Engineer for Tribological Materials, Dr. Michael Kim is teaching an online SAE Course, Materials Degradation in Mechanical Design: Wear Corrosion, Fatigue and Their Interactions. This five session online course will summarize the mechanisms that cause material and mechanical components to degrade in service through exposure to deleterious mechanical and environmental conditions.
Materials degradation from environmental conditions is a common factor that will often occur in mechanical equipment used in every type of environment. These processes can frequently materialize in unpredicted harmful ways, especially when they interact and lead to early component damage or failure. Dr. Kim will employ his 25 years of experience in the design, testing and utilization of tribological materials to help participants develop knowledge of issues of material degradation in service and the effect upon performance and reliability of mechanical equipment. Dr. Kim will also cover potential solutions including material selection and material or design modifications that would improve component life and performance in a range of harmful environments or operating conditions.
